External factors depress quarterly figures for Port of Antwerp-Bruges

Must read

Port of Antwerp-Bruges handled a total of 65.5 million tons of goods in the first quarter of 2026, a decrease of 3.2% compared to the same period last year. After a weak start in January and February, there was a clear catch-up movement in March.

The decline is the result of a combination of external factors. Unfavorable weather conditions, social actions, geopolitical tensions and a weakened European industry combined to cause disruptions in the logistics chain and lower demand.

The general cargo segment in particular was hit (-4.4%), with pressure on both container traffic and conventional general cargo. Bulk remained almost stable (-0.6%), while the RoRo segment just grew (+5.3%).

According to the port authority, the figures show how strongly external circumstances are currently impacting both port activities and the broader economy. At the same time, the importance of investments in robust infrastructure, sustainability and efficiency is underlined to maintain the role of the port as a reliable logistics link.

The message is also heard at policy level that the pressure on the European economy is structural. According to the port authority, this requires clear choices and ports that continue to invest in capacity and future-oriented solutions.
