Key Takeaways:

  • Maersk Ground Freight plans to open five to seven new U.S. facilities in 2026 after officially launching a 165,000-square-foot terminal in Fontana, Calif., in January.
  • The expansion aims to improve routing efficiency and transit time reliability as Maersk adds to its 65 existing U.S. ground freight sites and strengthens connectivity between key hubs.
  • Additional terminals in Savannah and Coppell opened in recent months, and Maersk says it will continue evaluating new locations based on evolving customer needs.

Maersk Ground Freight plans to open five to seven new facilities in 2026 following the official opening of a Fontana, Calif., terminal in January, a company representative said Feb. 26.

The 165,000-square-foot Fontana site in the Inland Empire has 22 docks and bays. The facility began operations in 2025, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in January.

Best known for its containership business, Maersk’s expansion of its U.S. ground operations is part of a wider global initiative.

Maersk ranks No. 7 on the Transport Topics Top 50 list of the largest global freight companies and No. 29 on the TT Top 100 logistics companies list.

Currently, Maersk operates 65 ground freight facilities in the U.S. The next terminals to open will be smaller than the Fontana site, the spokeswoman said.

“We expand where it helps us create more efficient routing, reduce empty miles, and improve transit time reliability for customers,” the spokeswoman said in an email.

“Rather than adding capacity for its own sake, we focus on locations that enhance connectivity between key hubs, support our end-to-end logistics offering and improve overall network performance. As customer needs evolve, we’ll continue to evaluate opportunities to grow the footprint in ways that reinforce speed, reliability and national coverage,” she added.

Alongside specialized and standard less-than-truckload services, Maersk’s U.S. ground freight operations offer truckload, store delivery and white-glove services.

Maersk Ground Freight’s current fleet comprises more than 1,000 trucks and around 4,500 trailers.

The Fontana hub, for instance, is set to accelerate Maersk’s turnaround times by up to five hours and expand customer options through the Ontario corridor, the company said in a Jan. 28 statement.

Maersk already has an Inland Empire Contract Logistics campus.

The Fontana site also complements existing ground freight stations in Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles.

Elsewhere in the U.S., as part of the expansion, the ground freight division opened a terminal in Savannah, Ga., in December. The 20,000-square-foot facility has three docks and a dedicated fleet to support pickup and delivery in the Savannah market.

The location offers direct access to Interstates 95 and 16, which connect Savannah and its growing port to southeastern U.S. markets such as Atlanta; Jacksonville, Fla.; Charleston, S.C.; and Charlotte, N.C.

In October, Maersk Ground Freight opened a facility in Coppell, Texas. The facility replaced Maersk’s existing Irving station and expanded the carrier’s footprint in Texas. The Coppell facility has more than 30 dock-high doors and two ramps, a spokeswoman said.

A substantial proportion of the top LTL carriers have sought to increase connectivity and their door counts in recent quarters, including Estes Express Lines and AAA Cooper Transportation, particularly with expectations of an upturn in the fortunes of the segment and the freight market in general in 2026.

Maersk Ground Freight is separate from Performance Team, which operates Maersk’s warehousing, e-commerce order fulfillment and drayage business.
