In June, Goodyear announced plans to close its tyre manufacturing facility in South Africa. During the following weeks, the local Department of Trade, Industry and Competition sought to avoid the closure, with
Yamkela Fanisi, a department Spokesperson, indicated that a deal similar to the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) agreement made with to avert job losses at ArcelorMittal could be struck. However, two months later, on 15 August SABC reported that Goodyear had officially closed to doors of the Kariega plant after 78 years in operation.
