Scania has developed an electric-powered 8×4 for Swedish miner LKAB, which will use it at its mine in Malmberget, northern Sweden.
The unique feature of this vehicle is the two steerable front axles, which provide greater transport capacity for heavy loads and better stability on the difficult roads in the mines. The vehicle was developed from an electric 6×4 used in the same mine since 2022 and has been nicknamed ‘Sleipner’, after the legendary eight-legged horse of the Scandinavian god Odin. Fully loaded, the truck weighs 60 tons, of which 38 tons have a loading capacity. It is powered by a 400 kW EM C 1-4 electric motor and powered by two MP20 batteries with a total installed capacity of 416 kWh.
