North Sea Port: LanzaTech invests 500 million euros in SAF factory

Must read

LanzaTech plans an investment of 500 million euros in North Sea Port to build Europe’s first commercial sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant based on alcohol-to-jet technology. The new plant in Ghent will produce 79,000 tons of SAF and 9,000 tons of renewable diesel annually.

The investment fits in with North Sea Port’s Impact 2030 strategic plan, which focuses on energy transition, circular industry and alternative fuels such as hydrogen and biofuels. The project also represents an important step towards sustainability for the aviation sector. “With LanzaTech we are bringing a pioneering technology company to Ghent and strengthening our role in sustainable growth, innovation and high-quality employment,” says CEO Cas König (photo).

LanzaTech chose Ghent because of the port’s strong industrial ecosystem and extensive logistics infrastructure. Proximity to ArcelorMittal’s Steelanol ethanol plant also played a role. The factory will create approximately 300 jobs during the construction phase and will provide 50 permanent, highly qualified jobs once commissioned.
