Why Nitrogen Could be Your New Inflation Option

Must read

If a customer rolls into your bays with a green valve cap on their tires, it may seem like a small detail, but it signals something different — nitrogen tire inflation. The question is, why does nitrogen inflation matter, and how can dealers communicate its value to customers? Is it all just hot air?

How Nitrogen Tire Inflation Works

Compressed air contains about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases. Inflating with nitrogen increases the nitrogen concentration to between 93% and 99%, reducing the amount of oxygen and trace gases. Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they escape from tires more slowly. That helps tires maintain proper inflation longer.

Proper inflation is the foundation for tire performance. Data from the U.S. Department of Energy shows that every 1 psi drop in tire pressure across all four tires can cut fuel efficiency by 0.3%. Even a slight pressure loss can waste money at the pump. The benefit of nitrogen tire inflation is that, while some air loss still occurs, it happens much slower than with regular compressed air.

Nitrogen is also drier, which reduces the risk of corrosion on wheels and TPMS sensors. When dealers explain this connection to customers, it helps them see the value. Drivers who know nitrogen can help prevent TPMS lights from turning on are far more likely to ask for it.

Ideal for Premium and UHP Tire Customers

Nitrogen inflation tends to attract customers who invest in premium or ultra-high-performance tires. These drivers often care about consistent performance and tire pressure stability. Nitrogen-filled tires maintain steadier pressure as temperatures fluctuate, giving customers greater confidence and peace of mind.

From a cost standpoint, nitrogen inflation is inexpensive… often just a few dollars per tire. For customers who aren’t diligent about maintenance, it provides affordable protection against underinflation.

For dealers, the equipment and filters needed to generate nitrogen typically pay for themselves over time. Once installed, the ongoing expense is minimal, turning nitrogen service into a steady profit center. Beyond revenue, it reinforces trust and helps position your shop as one that values long-term vehicle care.
