When to use on Your Customer’s Vehicles

Must read

Is it time to break out the road force balancing machine – or is that going too far? It depends. Let’s break it down. If you’ve ever dealt with a vehicle that still vibrates after a standard balancing job, you know the frustration. Regular balancing handles uneven weight distribution, but it won’t fix out-of-round tires, internal belt shifts, or sidewall stiffness variations.

Why Traditional Road Force Balancing Isn’t Always Enough

A regular balancing job may get the weights in the right place, but it can’t compensate for structural tire issues. Most drivers don’t realize that tires can have variable sidewall stiffness. As the tire rotates, the firmer areas push harder against the pavement, creating small but persistent vibrations. No amount of weight reallocation will solve that.

How Road Force Balancing Solves the Problem

Road force balancing simulates real-world driving conditions. A large roller applies up to 1,400 pounds of force against the tire, mimicking vehicle weight. The machine measures how the tire and wheel respond under pressure, then recommends optimal positioning of the tire on the rim to minimize vibration.

When It Makes Sense

It’s not for every car, but some situations clearly benefit:

  • Low-profile tires: These have shorter, stiffer sidewalls, making any imperfection easier to feel through the steering wheel.
  • Ongoing vibration complaints: If a customer has had multiple jobs with no improvement, road force balancing often reveals the real issue.
  • Premium or performance vehicles: These drivers typically expect a smoother ride and may be more open to higher-end solutions.

Can All Drivers Benefit?

Yes, but not every customer will opt in. That said, it’s worth offering, especially for customers driving on low-profile tires. Even if they choose not to purchase the service, knowing it’s available builds confidence in your shop’s expertise and tools.

In the end, road force balancing is about eliminating guesswork. When used strategically, it resolves persistent complaints, improves customer satisfaction, and sets your shop apart.
