WDP is developing a large-scale solar park of 8.5 megawatt peak, good for 12,000 solar panels, in Heppignies, close to Charleroi airport. The project is an important step in the further sustainability of the logistics portfolio and combines energy generation with strict aviation safety.
The proximity to the airport required an adapted design to avoid reflection towards air traffic. That is why the orientation of the panels has been optimized and 40% of the installations are equipped with an innovative anti-reflective foil. Technology from the German start-up Phytonics, a spin-off of the Karlsruher Institute of Technology, is used for no fewer than 5,000 panels. This is one of the first large-scale reference projects in Europe with this application.
The microscopic structure of the foil limits reflection without significant loss of efficiency. The annual energy yield remains stable, while the safety gain is significant.
With this project, WDP not only strengthens its renewable energy capacity, but also supports customers in the further decarbonization of their supply chain.
