Volvo Car AB will increase planned production of its fully-electric EX60 SUV after European orders exceeded expectations with more than 3,000 cars booked in Sweden alone within weeks of its reveal.

The Geely-owned carmaker plans to raise output at its Torslanda plant in Sweden, according to a statement March 4. The company is also in talks with labor unions about keeping the factory open an extra week this summer ahead of customer deliveries.

So far the EX60, with a driving range of more than 497 miles on a single charge, is only available in European markets. U.S. order books are due to open later this spring.

Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson has described the five-seater model as a “game-changer” for future growth. Costing from 62,990 euros  ($73,701) in Germany, the midrange SUV offers an electric alternative to Volvo’s best-selling hybrid XC60 at a similar price point.

The demand is in line with signs of strengthening in the EV market across the region. In January, fully-electric vehicle sales in Europe rose 14%, while plug-in hybrid sales jumped nearly a third. The transition remains volatile with Stellantis NV previously  announcing $26 billion in writedowns tied largely to unprofitable EV projects and scrapped upcoming models.

The company on March 4 also reported a sales drop of 10% to 156,965 cars in the three months through February, citing tariffs, regulatory developments in the U.S. and the extended Lunar New Year holiday in China. Electrified models accounted for nearly half of total sales while fully-electric cars made up a quarter.
