(VIDEO) Port of Genk is now called ‘Genk Cargo Connect’

Must read

‘Genk Cargo Connect, multimodal heart of Europe’: that is the new name of Port Genk. “The term ‘port’ no longer covers it for a long time,” says general manager Heike Ulburghs, who proposed the name and logo change today, together with Genk mayor Wim Dries.

Genk Cargo Connect, which started 89 years ago as a coal port for the Kempen coal mines, is now a logistics service provider with a focus on storage, transshipment and a rail terminal that has become increasingly important in a short time. The company is owned by Group Machiels (50%) and Aperam (50%).

The site along the Albert Canal has its own rail connection to the European network and is strategically located for road transport. The terminal thus forms a link between different transport modes, suitable for both ‘first mile’ and ‘last mile’.

Multimodal heart of Europe

The new baseline ‘Multimodal heart of Europe’ underlines the geographical asset of the site, at a crossroads where waterways, rail and road come together. “Thanks to this location, we create sustainable logistics chains between industry and transport,” says Heike Ulburghs.

The new name should also eliminate the confusion with ‘Port of Limburg’, across the Albert Canal and also in Genk. ‘Port of Limburg’ also purchased container transport from GCC. “There are indeed sometimes misunderstandings. And an English name is also easier and better for our international contacts,” concludes Heike Ulburghs.
