U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes see mixed results, for week ending May 31, reports AAR

United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending May 31, were mixed, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads.

Rail carloads, at 219,599, posted a 6.6% annual gain, trailing the weeks ending May 24 and May 17, at 226,091, and 229,226, respectively.

AAR reported that seven of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: coal, up 8,509 carloads, to 60,123; nonmetallic minerals, up 3,432 carloads, to 30,560; and chemicals, up 1,761 carloads, to 32,383. Commodity groups posting annual declines included: motor vehicles and parts, down 886 carloads, to 13,887; forest products, down 637 carloads, to 7,832; and miscellaneous carloads, down 201 carloads, to 7,776.  

Intermodal containers and trailers, at 240,285 units, fell 1.5% annually, trailing the weeks ending May 24 and May 17, at 262,618, and 261,549, respectively.

Through the first 22 weeks of 2025, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 4,800,533, are up 2.5% annually, and intermodal units, at 5,939,994 units, are up 6.7% annually.
