United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending June 21, were mixed, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 229,655, increased 4.5% annually, topping the weeks ending June 14 and June 7, at 224,851, and 225,301, respectively.
AAR reported that seven of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: grain, up 3,913 carloads, to 21,300; miscellaneous carloads, up 2,059 carloads, to 10,723; and metallic ores and metals, up 1,167 carloads, to 22,269. Commodity groups posting annual declines included: nonmetallic minerals, down 529 carloads, to 31,460; forest products, down 29 carloads, to 8,050; and farm products excl. grain, and food, down 6 carloads, to 16,872.
Intermodal containers and trailers, at 257,673 units, fell 2.9% annually, trailing the weeks ending June 14 and June 7, at 260,959 and 258,506, respectively.
Through the first 25 weeks of 2025, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 5,480,340, are up 2.5% annually, and intermodal units, at 6,717,132 containers and trailers, are up 5.4% annually.
