The investigation into the murder of a 56-year-old man last Friday in Zeebrugge was very efficient: the two suspects, Russian truck drivers of 33 and 45 years respectively, were arrested on Tuesday evening after a chase in Poland.
This tragic murder would have been limited to the ‘Miscellaneous’ section in the press, were it not that it soon became apparent that the two suspects were truck drivers who were stationed in Zeebrugge. On Friday evening they had a fight with Herwin, a 56-year-old man who worked in the harbor. The victim was violently beaten and died on the spot, despite attempts for resuscitation by a passer -by.
Images of surveillance cameras from the night shop where the two suspects had made some purchases, made it clear that it was probably two truck drivers from Eastern Europe. On Sunday evening, the federal police and the public prosecutor distributed an investigation message via Europol, which resulted in enough reactions to discover that the two suspects had left the country in the direction of Poland. They were arrested there, more specifically on the A2 motorway near the town of Skierniewce. There is an extradition procedure.
According to the VRT, it is not yet certain whether the two Russians were in Zeebrugge during a rest period between two driving periods. The name of their employer is also not yet known, but the research focuses on companies that regularly employ Russian drivers and have their drivers spent the weekend at one of the truck parking in the port of Zeebrugge.
