Following the news that Halfords Group has appointed Adam Pay as the new managing director of Garages, Tyres & Accessories contacted Pay for an interview that will be published in the August edition of Tyres & Accessories magazine. What follows is a preview of that interview ahead of publication:
Pay, reporting to CEO Henry Birch, joins the executive team with over 20 years of experience in the automotive and service sectors, including roles as managing director of mycar and Kmart Tyre & Auto in Australia and Operations Manager at Kwik-Fit in the UK.
Pay highlights the UK’s advanced adoption of online services, mobile offerings, and electric vehicle (EV) integration, creating a dynamic environment where Halfords is well-placed to lead due to its strong brand and nationwide reach. However, he also emphasizes a customer-centric approach, aiming to integrate digital, mobile, and physical garage services seamlessly while fostering colleague engagement and operational excellence to enhance customer experiences and drive balanced growth across financial performance, customer satisfaction, and workforce empowerment.
Looking ahead, Pay envisions leveraging Halfords’ robust infrastructure to capitalize on emerging technologies, particularly in EV servicing, while maintaining high-quality service for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. He also acknowledges challenges like staffing and sustainability, planning to address them through robust training, apprenticeship programs, and environmentally conscious initiatives like improving fuel efficiency and scaling EV capabilities.
