Six renewed goods traces of 750 meters in the Ghent port

Must read

Infrabel has thoroughly renewed the Mercator railway bundle in North Sea Port Gent and officially put it into use today. Six of the nine tracks are now 750 meters or longer, so that longer freight trains can be used. That increases efficiency and lowers the costs of rail transport.

The works, good for an investment of 12.5 million euros, were made possible with the support of the National Relance Plan and European resources. In addition to the extension of the tracks, points were also renewed and almost three kilometers of new track were laid.

With this procedure, Infrabel wants to stimulate the modal shift: more goods by train instead of on the road, which causes fewer traffic jams, fewer emissions and a stronger position of the port of Ghent as a logistics turntable.

The commissioning took place in the presence of Flemish Prime Minister Matthias Diependaele, Flemish Minister for Mobility and Havens Annick De Ridder, Governor of East Flanders Carina van Cauter and the CEOs of North Sea Port (Cas König), Lineas (Erik van Ockel).
