Second Cycle Green Deal Sustainable Logistics has started

Must read

Environment Brussels and Brussels Mobility have started the second cycle of the Green Deal Sustainable Logistics. This initiative, part of the Brussels Shifting Economy, brings together public and private players to make urban logistics less polluting, more efficient and more sustainable.

The first cycle, launched in April 2023, had 63 signatories and yielded striking results:

  • More than 1 million avoided kilometers in freight transport
  • The establishment of 12 urban logistics hubs
  • Strong growth of bicycle courier services
  • made more than 150,000 km with electric trucks

The second cycle (2025-2027) is expanding this commitment with 88 signatories, including AB InBev, IKEA, Proximus and Colruyt, but also cycling logistics cooperatives such as Urbike and Cargo Velo, hospitals and the port of Brussels. Together they focus on four priorities: sensitization of customers and partners, reducing kilometers traveled, the switch to low -carbon transport modes and the use of new clean technologies such as electric trucks and hydrogen.

According to Brussels Minister of Climate Transition and Environment Alain Maron, the success of the Green Deal shows that a deep transformation is underway, thanks to the collective engagement of Brussels companies and institutions. Mobility minister Elke van den Brandt emphasized that logistics should be commemorated fundamentally to tackle both climate challenges and improve the quality of life in the city.

16,000 freight and 30,000 vans per day

Every day around 16,000 trucks and 30,000 vans run through the capital. Together they are good for almost a third of the greenhouse gas emissions of road transport and an important share in air pollution and noise pollution. According to figures from Brussels and Brussels Mobility, freight transport is responsible for 15% of all kilometers traveled, 26% of particulate matter emissions (PM2.5), up to 39% of NOx emissions and 24% of COâ‚‚ emissions.

The Green Deal emission -poor city logistics wants to reduce this impact through cooperation and innovation. The diversity of the 88 signatories – ranging from multinationals and SMEs to governments and cooperatives – creates a broad dynamic of learning, innovation and collaboration.
