The defense fair BEDEX 2026 will take place in Brussels Expo, from 12 to 14 March 2026. Scania will be present there with an R450 B4x4HZ Gryphus, which has the special feature that it can run on different types of diesel.
Scania calls its models for military use Gryphus. This is a special version of an XT that is equipped with a whole range of specific accessories. The vehicle exhibited at the Bedex fair is equipped with a longitudinal, transverse and central differential lock, which can be engaged while driving. The cabin can be exchanged for an armored cabin.
Mechanically, the 450 hp engine is called ‘single fuel’. “Every type of Defense rolling stock must be able to operate on the same standard military fuel. This fuel is usually less pure and often contains more sulfur than the diesel used in civilian applications. During operations or in case of scarcity, high-quality diesel is not always available,” explains Peter Tavernier, Senior Account Manager Defense & Airport Applications at Scania Belgium. “Our added value lies in the fact that, with minimal adjustments, we can run vehicles that meet the strictest Euro VI standards – and soon Euro VII – on these military fuels. This way, vehicles can continue to run on the most environmentally friendly fuel under normal conditions (“in peacetime”), without having to fall back on older engine technologies with less stringent emission standards.”
