Ford has officially ended production of the Ford Focus, closing a 27-year chapter for one of its most successful models.
The last unit, a white five-door hatchback, rolled off the line at the Saarlouis plant in Germany this month, marking the end of a car that sold more than 12 million units worldwide, Ford said.
“So Long, Focus,” the automaker’s website says. “It’s been a remarkable run. Unfortunately, we’re no longer building the Ford Focus. Contact your local dealer about other vehicles perfect for you and your family.”
According to the automaker, it introduced the Focus in 1998 as part of its strategy to replace the Escort and bring together its compact car lineup across Europe and North America. The first-generation model debuted in Europe that year and earned recognition, including the 1999 European Car of the Year award. North American sales began in late 1999 for the 2000 model year, cementing the Focus as a worldwide success from the start.
The decision shows Ford’s pivot toward electric vehicles and SUVs. Ford executives confirmed the move was driven by profitability concerns and shifting consumer demand. Ford’s European lineup now focuses on electrified crossovers, including the Explorer and Capri, with a new Focus-sized crossover expected in 2027.
