Vermont’s Department of Motor Vehicles and the PrePass Safety Alliance have activated mobile bypass technology at two inspection sites, enabling faster travel for approved trucks.

The state partnered with the nonprofit public-private alliance to introduce the PrePass Mobile App, which allows qualified carriers to receive bypass decisions on their phones or telematics devices. The launch makes Vermont the 47th jurisdiction to adopt digital screening and places the technology at the southbound weigh station in Putney on Interstate 91 and the eastbound site in Fair Haven on state Route 4, two key freight corridors linking Vermont with New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New York.

The app sends safety scores, credential data and compliance information to enforcement officers as a truck approaches an inspection point. Trucks that meet Vermont’s standards can continue at highway speeds, while others are directed into the weigh station for inspection. PrePass says each bypass can save up to seven minutes, cut nearly half a gallon of fuel and reduce operating costs by as much as $11.75, easing congestion and reducing idling for drivers.

Mark Doughty, president and CEO of PrePass Safety Alliance, said the new capability expands safety and efficiency. “The ability to screen trucks with digital infrastructure strengthens enforcement capability while reducing unnecessary stops for carriers who do things the right way,” Doughty said.

The DMV said the tool helps officers focus on carriers that may present higher risk while keeping compliant trucks moving.

“This technology gives our officers another effective tool to keep Vermont’s highways safe,” said Capt. Matthew Nesto of Vermont DMV Enforcement. “By using digital screening, we can direct our attention to where it’s needed most while helping compliant carriers move efficiently through the state.

The app connects with more than 586 PrePass locations across North America, giving carriers a unified system as they move across state lines.
