In 2023, wholesaler and distributor of pharmaceutical products Medista received a contract from Wallonia for the management of the strategic stock of personal protective equipment (PPE). This stock is now managed by Ajimex (Yusen Logistics) in Gembloux.
The contract between Wallonia and Medista has a duration of four years. Initially, Medista stored the PBM (masks, gloves, protective clothing) in its own warehouses in Zaventem, but in 2025 the stock moved to one of the buildings of the Pharmaceutical Campus of Yusen Logistics in Gembloux, a campus that was visited yesterday.
All activities that Yusen Logistics performs for Medista must of course meet the GDP standards that apply in the pharmaceutical sector, which includes a very strict temperature control. The heart of the operation is a new, fully automated high -rise warehouse (30 meters) from Dematic. It has a capacity of 13,000 pallets, which must be stored at a temperature between 15 and 25 degrees. Another zone at -25 ° will soon be put into use after the permits were obtained in May 2025. There are also containers on the site in which certain vaccines are stored at a temperature of -75 °.
Ajimex (a subsidiary of Yusen Logistics) and Medista are responsible for the distribution of PPE to the nearly a thousand institutions that depend on Wallonia. Not the hospitals (whose supplies depend on the federal government), but retirement homes, institutions for people with disabilities and other health institutions that are under regional supervision. In the event of a crisis, the full stock can be mobilized within 24 hours.
