Macy’s is laying off 993 employees as it closes its fulfillment center in Cheshire, Connecticut, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice dated Jan.13.

Operating units will be closed at the center, which has two locations in short proximity of each other, per the notice. Permanent job eliminations will occur in phases based on the employees’ shift and classification.

Some maintenance and asset protection employees will remain employed through April 16, 2027, to “handle the decommissioning process,” per the filing.

Severance and benefits information will be available to impacted employees, including information regarding transfer opportunities to nearby Macy’s locations, according to the notice. Impacted roles include core trainers, fulfillment associates, loaders and unloaders as well as operations managers.

Macy’s did not provide a reason for the closure, which isn’t the only shutdown happening in Connecticut. This week, another WARN filing outlined plans to shutter the remaining operating units at a distribution center in South Windsor. Fifty-seven employees will be impacted by the cut, with layoffs slated to start March 14. Macy’s also plans to shutter a fulfillment center in Oklahoma this spring.

Macy’s supply chain network changes come as it pushes its “Bold New Chapter” plan to drive $235 million in cost savings this year.
