In 2025, the Volvo factory in Ghent is celebrating its 50th anniversary. A great opportunity to look back on the road traveled and launch new projects together with numerous prominent figures, including King Filip himself.
Today, the Ghent location is the largest truck factory in the Volvo group in the world. The site has more than 4500 people and builds more than 40,000 trucks annually. That was certainly an invitation in the Royal Palace worth of Martin Lundstedt, CEO of the Volvo Group, and King Filip was given a tour of the factory, after which he spoke with various employees who explained to him about the various activities of the factory in Ghent. Earlier in the day it was the turn of the Flemish Government (represented by Prime Minister Matthias Diependaele and Minister of Mobility and Public Works Annick de Ridder) to visit the factory.
“We have been supplying top quality here for fifty years, which is only possible thanks to motivated employees who are committed to our customers every day. I have experienced 16 of those 50 years and still be impressed every day in Ghent. In the coming years, we are still waiting for major challenges, such as the progressive electrification, digitization and competition with new players. Staying innovative and our location, both in Europe and in the port area of ​​Ghent, are important to say that we are ready for the future and to celebrate that we are organizing a jubilee week with various activities for employees, students and customers, “said Koen Leemans, general manager of Volvo Group Belgium.
The festivities around this jubilee were supplemented with a gesture that lays the foundation for the future of the factory: the first spade stitch for a new mobility hub that will combine fast loading posts for trucks (in collaboration with Milence) and a hydrogen station (in collaboration with Air Products).
