This is again an exclusive of Transportmedia: for the first time, the editors have searched all available public information sources to draw up a ranking of the largest Belgian transport fleets in Europe. And it is clear that Jost is in the lead…
First a word about the method: each country is required to make public a tool that allows a transport company to be identified by its transport permit number and the number of vehicles linked to this permit. Although the tools are considerably less user-friendly in some countries (such as France), it was sufficient to draw up a list of the foreign subsidiaries of Belgian transport companies… which took weeks of work.
This ranking is not 100% complete. Only foreign companies for which the link with a Belgian transport company is 100% clear are included. Furthermore, countries such as Switzerland or the United Kingdom (and a fortiori Turkey or other more ‘exotic’ countries) are not obliged to publish a register of their carriers. Our ranking therefore contains some ‘gaps’.
More Walloon carriers
Nevertheless, it gives a fairly clear picture of the 100 largest Belgian carriers. Some are clearly more active with their own fleet outside Belgium (such as Ziegler) and others (especially from the provinces of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg) rely heavily on their Luxembourg subsidiaries to maintain a profitable international transport activity.
Finally, this work makes it possible to objectify the role of each European country in the internationalization strategy of Belgian carriers. Luxembourg and France account for the lion’s share here, followed by the Netherlands, while Slovakia only comes in fourth. In total, vehicles registered in a Central European country represent only 8.4% of the fleet of the 150 largest Belgian carriers.
