In the first quarter of 2025, inland vessels transported 40.2 million tonnes of goods on the Belgian waterways. That is 5.2% less than in the fourth quarter of 2024, when 42.4 million tonnes were registered. Compared to the same period last year, however, there is a slight increase of 1.2%. This is according to new figures from the Belgian statistics agency Statbel.
Container transport via inland vessels fell to 3.7 million tons. That is a decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous quarter and 5.3% compared to the first quarter of 2024.
The statistics of Statbel relate to full inland shipping on Belgian waterways, including ships from abroad.
