Homeowners to plug into profits as EV charge point rules relaxed

Must read

  • Planning rules scrapped: No more permission needed to install home EV chargers.
  • Nationwide surge: This comes as YourParkingSpace saw EV charger listings already rise by as much as 167% in 2024.
  • Extra income boost: Driveways with EV chargers earn up to 13% more than standard spaces.

UK homeowners could soon be cashing in even more by renting out their driveways, after the government scrapped the need for planning permission to install electric vehicle (EV) charge points.

The move makes it even easier for homeowners with a driveway to install a charge point and earn extra income by renting it out to motorists looking for somewhere to park and charge, according to leading online parking platform YourParkingSpace.

Although the policy change is aimed at speeding up the UK’s switch to electric vehicles, it also opens the door to a new income stream for households seeking simple ways to boost their earnings during the cost-of-living crisis.

This comes as new data from YourParkingSpace reveals that spaces with EV charge points – including driveways and commercial locations – generated nearly £30 million in bookings in 2024. While some of this revenue comes from commercial sites, listings are also rising fast for private driveways with home chargers.

Demand remains strongest in London – accounting for two-thirds of all bookings – but the fastest growth in EV charger listings is happening outside the capital. Regions such as the South West (up 167%), East Midlands (160%), and Wales (150%) are leading the charge, showing that homeowners across the UK are increasingly turning to driveway rental as a way to earn extra income.

Andy Syrett, UK Managing Director at YourParkingSpace, said: “This is welcome news. By cutting planning red tape, the government has made it even easier for people to install EV charge points at home and rent them out when not in use.”

Meanwhile, YourParkingSpace data also shows that listings with an EV charge point generate 13% more income on average than those without.

Andy added: “When you consider that many of our driveway listings in hotspot areas – such as near football stadiums, music venues, train stations, and airports – typically earn around £1,000 a year, that extra 13% can quickly cover the cost of installing a charge point.

“With installation now simpler and planning rules relaxed, we expect more homeowners to take advantage of this easy way to boost their income.”
“We have also been impressed by the proactive communication from the Fleet Alliance team when actions are required such as MOTs and servicing, which has made responsibility for the company vehicle easier for the driver.

“Not only have we received an extremely professional service but the attention to detail given when understanding our specific requirements, combined with the friendly and approachable delivery, has been very impressive,” he added.

Fleet Alliance CEO, Andy Bruce, commented: ”Providing outstanding levels of customer service and support is at the heart of everything we do.  And it’s very gratifying to hear that Eurocell values the services that we provide so highly. Long may it continue.”
