The Flemish Government has principally approved the project decision for the western access Waaslandhaven. HThe project decision is now being submitted to the Council of State. The final determination follows in the autumn, after which the tender and effective implementation can start.
In order to be able to catch the expected growth of container traffic until 2030, a new tidal dock will be installed within the port area of Antwerp that turns on the Deurganck dock and extra terminals. New port areas for logistics are also being developed. In order to mild the impact on the environment, the Flemish Government has launched three subprojects within the complex project ‘Extra container treatment capacity’ (ECA) such as the Container cluster Left Belder (CCL) and the Waaslandhaven (WOW) sub -project (WOW) that must ensure that all containers are flein and sustainers.
The WOW includes the construction of a new access road to the west of the Waaslandhaven, from the Schoorhavenweg to the Deurganckdok West. This infrastructure (including rail and bicycle connections.) Must serve to keep the heavy port traffic from the surrounding residential areas and to connect the port directly to the E34. In addition to the roadway New railway lines and bicycle connections laid out.
“This decision is an important step in the implementation of the complex Project Extra container treatment capacity Antwerp. With this we prepare the port of Antwerp for the expected growth in world trade and we ensure better access to the Waaslandhaven,” said Minister of Mobility and Public Works Annick de Ridder.
