Everything is becoming more expensive… even HVO

Must read

While diesel prices rose again this morning by 16 cents per liter, the price of HVO, which is produced from non-fossil sources, follows more or less the same curve. At the Energiafed federation, we tried to find out the reasons for this development.

At the beginning of 2026, the maximum prices for HVO had fallen slightly, causing the difference with fossil B7 diesel to decrease slightly. Since the start of the energy crisis, the price of HVO has risen as much as that of B7 and this renewable fuel remains more expensive to purchase. Yet it does not use petroleum… Jean-Benoît Schrans (Energiafed spokesperson) explains why the price of HVO is also increasing: “In general, we see that the price of HVO follows that of diesel on the international markets, knowing that production costs are higher than for B7 diesel and that the energy required for production has been more expensive since the beginning of March. In addition, the demand for HVO often increases when the price of fossil diesel increases and HVO’s production capacity remains limited in comparison with diesel. What is rare is more expensive.” Whether we can speak of a windfall effect for the HVO producers…
