Electric Vehicle Lift Safety Tips for Auto Shops

Must read

The unique architecture of electric vehicles, particularly their high-voltage systems and battery packs, requires a specialized approach to maintenance and repair. Auto shops must prioritize electric vehicle lift safety, as traditional repair techniques can pose risks when applied to EVs.

EVs differ significantly due to their power source—the high-voltage battery pack. These batteries store massive amounts of energy, often operating at over 800 volts. This introduces electrical hazards not found in gas-powered vehicles.

When technicians service or remove EV batteries, they must use a battery lift that handles them safely and efficiently. For example, the BendPak Mobi-EVS battery scissor lift family includes models that support up to 4,500 lbs. Their compact design allows technicians to move them easily throughout the repair facility.

Weight Distribution and Proper Lifting Equipment for Electric Vehicle Lift Safety

EV battery packs typically sit in the vehicle’s floor. This placement creates a low center of gravity and adds substantial weight. The altered distribution impacts how you lift and support the vehicle.

Use a lift with the proper weight rating and arm reach to align with OEM lifting points, which are often reinforced near the edges of the battery pack. The BendPak 10AP two-post lift solves this by offering more high-strength steel in critical load-holding parts. It includes triple-telescoping swing arms and BendPak’s Automatic Swing Arm Restraint System for added safety.

These features support electric vehicle lift safety by ensuring stability and reliable operation during repairs.

Why Adapter Selection Is Essential for Safety

Adapters are a key part of electric vehicle lift safety. When using a two-post lift on an EV, technicians typically use screw pad adapters. These adapters position easily and offer a secure lift without harming the vehicle.

If lifting by a pinch weld, use pads or pucks that fit over the contact pads. These components allow the weld to slot securely into the adapter.

Some EVs, including certain Tesla models, have dedicated lift slots. In these cases, rubber puck adapters like AutoPucks by BendPak slide and lock into the slots. This creates a secure rubber contact point without risking damage to the vehicle or battery.

Technicians should always check the manufacturer’s instructions and the ALI Lifting Point Guide before performing any lift.

Avoid Risk by Using the Right Tools

Using the wrong adapter—or skipping it altogether—can create major hazards. It may damage the battery pack or undercarriage, destabilize the vehicle on the lift, or distribute weight unevenly, stressing the frame.

Electric vehicle lift safety depends on the right tools and training. Shops must commit to safety by using proper equipment, staying updated on best practices, and ensuring technicians follow lifting procedures for every vehicle.
