Bosch makes traceability synthetic fuels possible

Must read

Bosch brings a solution to the market that can be used to certify that a truck uses synthetic fuel and not fossil fuel. This is an important step towards the recognition of these replacement fuels as an alternative to diesel.

This solution is called Digital Fuel Twin. It is a software built into the vehicle that automatically records the use of environmentally friendly fuels and delivers a clear documentation of the CO2 reduction. It compares two types of data: the amount of fuel that is sold to each customer, together with the corresponding CO2 footprint, as specified by the manufacturers of renewable synthetic fuels, and the quantities of fuel purchased by the car parks. At the gas station, a digital data exchange between the gas station, the vehicle and the cloud indicates how much and what type of fuel has been purchased. If the quantities and data match the data that are registered at the pump and by a sensor in the vehicle, the properties of the fuel (fuel type, CO2 content) are documented and can be used in sustainability reports.

The Digital Fuel Twin is currently being used for the first time in the context of the Tour d’Europe. During a ride to Brussels via various European cities, a fleet fills trucks with combustion engines exclusively renewable synthetic fuels at public gas stations. The results of this European tour will be presented to representatives of the European Union, who still has to decide whether renewable synthetic fuels can be considered emission -free. This would make it possible to continue to produce trucks with combustion engines even after 2035.
