Bicycle logistics is growing explosively: 70% more packages in one year

Must read

In 2024, 5.2 million parcels were delivered by bicycle in Belgium, an increase of 70% compared to 2023. This is evident from the Barometer 2025 that the Belgian Cycle Logistics Federation (BCLF) announced today at the third edition of Route33 in Anderlecht Expo. The sector now employs 6,200 jobs and has traveled a total of 10.7 million kilometers.

The growth of e-commerce, combined with increasing congestion, makes city logistics increasingly complex. According to the BCLF, bicycle logistics proves its value in that context as a fast, flexible and sustainable solution that fits perfectly with urban reality. Brussels in particular is taking the lead: 57% of all bicycle deliveries in Belgium take place in the region.

Cargo bicycles are increasingly integrated into the logistics strategies of both specialized bicycle operators and mixed carriers. However, according to the federation, the potential remains far from being fully exploited. The sector therefore demands recognition as a fully-fledged pillar of urban logistics.

For Minister of Mobility, Climate and Ecological Transition Jean-Luc Crucke, cycling logistics must be included in the second federal cycling action plan that will start in 2026. Philippe Van de Casteele, general manager of the BCLF, emphasizes that the sector meets a clear operational need and will play a key role in the decarbonization of transport.
