The project, in collaboration with Goody Goody, a premier family-owned liquor retailer headquartered in Texas, marks the milestone debut of Pio in a live retail environment, enabled through Bastian as the first U.S. integrator to offer the solution.
Goody Goody initially engaged Bastian to explore an AutoStore deployment. However, after assessing business needs and site logistics, the project pivoted to the newly introduced Pio platform; an agile goods-to-person system designed to offer high performance at a fraction of the cost of traditional automation systems.
Pio offers a compact, scalable automation solution ideal for high-volume retail. Unlike larger, software-heavy automation systems, Pio emphasizes mechanical simplicity and modularity, requiring minimal infrastructure while maximizing flexibility.
Key technological features include:
- Scalable Robot Fleet: Pio allows for dynamic scaling of robotic units based on seasonality or store traffic, reducing overhead during slow periods and accelerating throughput during peak times.
- Real-Time Order Fulfillment: The system supports live order picking, enabling Goody Goody customers to shop via touchscreen kiosks or their mobile devices by scanning product QR codes from secured display cases.
- Shopify-Compatible: Though software is not the primary focus of this system, the design enables seamless integration with platforms such as Shopify for handling front-end customer transactions and order management.
- Enhanced Security: Products are stored in a secure fulfillment zone, accessed only by the robotic system, which significantly minimizes shrink and improves inventory control.
- Faster Installation: Due to its modular footprint and streamlined setup, Pio allows for shorter project timelines and less operational disruption during implementation.
As liquor retail locations face increasing security challenges and shifting shopper behaviors, this project introduces a modernized approach designed to strengthen product protection and elevate the customer experience. Customers will browse a curated selection of products in display cases and virtually build their carts, with fulfillment occurring in real time behind the scenes.
Installation is currently underway, with full system go-live targeted for August 2025, in advance of the critical holiday peak season. A fast-track deployment is made possible thanks to Pio’s simplified design and pre-configured components.
