What Techs Need to Know About Low-Viscosity Oils

Must read

Many engines are using low-viscosity oils these days. Some, like Toyota with 0W-8 and BMW 0W-12, are reaching for new frontiers of low viscosities. So what does a shop need to know about cars that use low-viscosity oils?

It starts with the brakes and the transmission. If you have a lower viscosity fluid, it can react faster, shift gears sooner, more smoothly, and have less harshness between shifts. For brakes, it means that that lower viscosity brake fluid is able to transmit the actions of the HCU. In other words, pumps, accumulators, and everything else—much faster than a higher-viscosity brake fluid. So with this, you’re able to have ADAS working properly. Meaning your transmission is shifting all of its gears to make sure that everything operates smoothly. The vehicle’s computer modules configure and calibrate for these low-viscosity fluids.
