U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes post gains, for week ending May 10, reports AAR

United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week of May 10, saw annual gains, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Rail carloads, at 222,238, posted a 6.2% annual gain, trailing the weeks ending May 3 and April 26, at 225,641, and 233,411, respectively.

AAR reported that six of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: coal, up 9,760 carloads, to 56,488; grain, up 3,433 carloads, to 20,661; and nonmetallic minerals, up 1,198 carloads, to 32,661. Commodity groups with annual decreases included: metallic ores and metals, down 2,079 carloads, to 18,501; chemicals, down 742 carloads, to 32,329; and petroleum and petroleum products, down 656 carloads, to 10,342.

Weekly intermodal containers and trailers, at 273,314, rose 5.4% annually, topping the weeks ending May 3 and April 26, at 273,052, and 268,694, respectively.

Through the first 19 weeks of 2025, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 4,125,617, increased 2.0% annually, and intermodal units, at 5,175,542, increased 7.9% annually.
