For months, Iveco has tested trucks in which the semi-autonomous driver’s assistance of PLUS is integrated. The last test took place in Krefeld, Germany in collaboration with DSV and DM drogerie Markt.
The truck was jointly developed by IVECO and the American software company Plus that has developed a AI -based solution for highly automated driving, in combination with advanced sensors such as Lidar, Radar and Cameras. The truck offers the driver a 360 -degree view around the vehicle and new ways to keep an eye on traffic and the road. Plus autonomous driving technology can safely and automatically perform normal maneuvers on the highway, such as centering in the lane, lane initiated or suggested by the system, help with traffic jams and push maneuvers, where the driver monitors the system. It is therefore an autonomous system of level 4. The system can also reduce fuel consumption by around 10 percent.
Under real circumstances, goods were delivered on the route between two warehouses of DSV Solutionsen DM in Krefeld and Hennef. “The focus is on depot-to-depot operations, because the technology is perfect for recurring processes where sufficient data is available.” said Peter Matthiesen, senior director, Group Innovation, Mobility & Truck Technology at DSV. “The pilot project confirmed the expected findings and assumptions, especially with regard to improved safety and reliability. The autonomous driving system has consistent safe driving behavior, especially when maintaining the lane, changing lane, adaptive driving and dealing with predictable traffic situations. Role, because there is a driver deficit of nearly 200,000 in Europe, which is expected to rise to 700,000 in 2028. Autonomous driving technology will significantly improve the working environment, reduce mental and physical fatigue, increase safety and enable a considerably diverse group of drivers, ”Matthiesen adds.
Matthiesen does not think that this new technology will scrap jobs: “On the contrary: it will create new opportunities and jobs. Drivers will be added to use their expertise in other areas. This is conceivable, for example, in control towers, which will follow and support the daily operations. intervention is needed. ”
According to Marco Liccardo (Chief Technology & Digital Officer Iveco Group), this demo notes an important step in their journey to the commercialization of highly automated driving technologies: “Factory -built self -driving trucks are expected to be commercially available in the US by 2027. Refueling arranges. ”
