United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending AugustĀ 2, saw annual gains, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 233,085, posted a 6.4% annual gain, topping the weeks ending July 26 and July 19, at 231,029, and 229,739, respectively.
AAR reported that nine of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks posted annual gains, including: grain, up 4,402 carloads, to 21,557; coal, up 2,871 carloads, to 61,962; and motor vehicles and parts, up 1,467 carloads, to 15,822. The lone carload commodity group seeing a decline was petroleum and petroleum products, down 185 carloads, to 10,829.
Intermodal containers and trailers, at 279,724, eked out a 0.2% annual increase, trailing the week ending July 26, at 283,250, and topping the week ending July 19, at 277,143.
Through the first 31 weeks of 2025, U.S. railroads rail carloads, at 6,828,409, are up 2.8% annually, and intermodal units, at 8,334,202, are up 4.7% annually.
