McCulloch Group slashes speeding and fuel costs with Webfleet

Must read

McCulloch Group, one of the UK’s leading rail handling and rail logistics companies, has dramatically improved fleet safety and efficiency after rolling out Webfleet, Bridgestone’s globally trusted fleet management solution, across its vehicles and rail assets.

The Ayrshire-based company operates a fleet of 50 vans and 13 HGVs to support its mission-critical work maintaining, repairing and constructing rail infrastructure across the UK.

Since installing Webfleet in October 2024, speeding incidents have been significantly reduced across the entire fleet.

“With constant pressure to meet tight turnaround times, but strict working hour regulations in place to protect employee wellbeing, tackling speeding between jobs had become a top priority,” said David Hume, McCulloch Group’s Transport Manager.

“Coupled with a high-profile internal campaign to raise awareness of the safety risks of speeding, Webfleet’s OptiDrive insights have helped us completely transform driver behaviour. Speeding within our operations has been drastically reduced.”

Fuel consumption has also significantly improved, saving the company thousands of pounds and helping to reduce its carbon footprint. Less idling and better driving have led to a sharp uplift in MPG, allowing McCulloch Group to recoup the cost of the Webfleet system in under six months.

“Idling used to total 72 hours in a 24-hour period across the full fleet,” said David. “That’s now been reduced by over 80%. It’s an amazing result.

“Our engineers often work in cold conditions trackside and used to keep the engine constantly running for heating. Now, they briefly switch it on every 20 minutes to top up the temperature, which makes a big difference to fuel use and emissions.”

Webfleet’s PRO i driver terminals, paired with a fob-based driver identification system, have been key to the project’s success. With multiple engineers using the same van during the week, the fobs ensure individual driving behaviour can be tracked and analysed with precision.

McCulloch has also installed Webfleet asset trackers across 78 high-value rail assets.

“We design and manufacture a lot of our own specialist rail plant,” added David, “so knowing exactly where every item is at any time is invaluable. The Webfleet system even links each asset with the vehicle transporting it, giving us full traceability across the operation.”

Beverley Wise, Webfleet UKI Regional Director for Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, commented: “McCulloch Group’s proactive use of Webfleet is a great example of how technology can drive measurable improvements in safety, sustainability and cost control. We’re proud to support such a forward-thinking business in delivering vital infrastructure across the UK rail network.”
