Large Rim Tire Service Tips Every Shop Needs

Must read

Low-profile tires and big wheels look awesome, sure – but for your shop, they can be a real pain in the you-know-what to service. Let’s talk about the best practices for large rim tire service so you don’t get that overwhelming “uh-oh” feeling.

Mounting tires today isn’t what it was 10 years ago. Back then, techs had some room for error. But now, thin sidewalls, stiff construction, and rim guards that push the wheel lip outward make everything more difficult. With every inch you gain in wheel size, you lose that much in the sidewall.

To do the job right on large rims, your shop needs the right tools. And we’re not talking about just any tire changer. If you’re working on 18-inch-plus wheels, your machine should be simple to use but strong enough to handle the pressure.

Use the Right Equipment to Avoid Costly Mistakes

Your changer should be able to press the bead into the drop center during mounting, stop the bead from riding up the duck head, deliver precise and powerful bead loosening, and protect the wheel with adjustable clamps.

As with all mounting or dismounting procedures, rushing leads to damage. Make sure your techs loosen the bead correctly, avoid damaging TPMS sensors, and recognize reverse drop-center wheels. Skipping steps might save time, but it risks expensive mistakes.

Training Is Key to Large Rim Tire Service Success

It all comes down to fundamentals and the training you provide. There’s no one-size-fits-all method for these larger wheel assemblies. But there is a simple formula: the right equipment + the right training + repetition = service that feels like second nature.

With the right tools and consistent training, large rim tire service doesn’t have to feel intimidating. It can become a smooth, routine part of your shop’s workflow.
