U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes see annual gains, for week ending July 5, reports AAR

United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending July 5, saw annual gains, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Rail carloads, at 204,513, increased 4.8% annually, trailing the weeks ending June 28 and June 21, at 225,227, and 229,655, respectively.

AAR said that eight of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: metallic ores and metals, up 1,853 carloads, to 20,319; coal, up 1,642 carloads, to 52,351; and nonmetallic minerals, up 1,636 carloads, to 28,346. Commodity groups posting annual declines included:  forest products, down 160 carloads, to 7,798; and farm products excl. grain, and food, down 153 carloads, to 15,387.

Intermodal containers and trailers, at 238,536 units, increased 5.2% annually, trailing the weeks ending June 28 and June 21, at 266,197, and 257,673, respectively.

Through the first 27 weeks of 2025, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 5,910,080, are up 2.5% annually, and intermodal units, at 7,221,865, are up 5.1% annually.
