The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association‘s (USTMA) National Tire Safety Week 2025 is underway. The public education campaign promotes essential tire care practices that help keep drivers safe. Running from June 30 to July 4, this year’s campaign urges drivers to “Check Your Tires. Protect What Matters.”
USTMA encourages motorists to take routine steps to maintain tire safety, including checking pressure, tread depth, alignment, and rotation.
Survey Reveals Gaps in Tire Safety Knowledge
USTMA released new survey findings that underscore the need for National Tire Safety Week. While many drivers recognize the importance of tire maintenance, knowledge gaps remain.
Only 46% of U.S. drivers correctly identified the vehicle manual or the driver’s side door as the proper place to find recommended tire pressure. Nearly an equal amount, 45%, do not know where to locate this information.
When asked about how often to check tire pressure, 21.1% said weekly, and 19.4% said monthly. However, more than 10% said tire pressure should only be checked before long trips, or never.
About one in six drivers do not know tires come with built-in tread wear indicators. These indicators are vital for tracking tread depth, which affects traction and braking performance.
Among drivers aged 16 to 24, awareness is even lower. Additionally, 21% of respondents in this age group didn’t know about the indicators embedded in tread grooves.
Industry Leaders Emphasize Importance of Tire Maintenance During National Tire Safety Week 2025
“Tires are the only part of a vehicle that touches the road. Their condition plays a critical role in keeping everyone safe, from drivers and passengers to pedestrians,” said Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president and CEO. “National Tire Safety Week is a powerful reminder that proper tire care isn’t optional. It’s essential. Our member companies are committed to advancing tire technology with a strong focus on safety, innovation, and sustainability.”
“Tire conditions directly affect safety, handling and performance for every vehicle and motorist on the road,” said Dick Gust, CEO at the Tire Industry Association. “When drivers understand the value of routine maintenance, including pressure checks, alignment, rotation and tread inspections, they help protect lives. National Tire Safety Week is an important reminder to act on these simple steps.”
Simple Maintenance Steps to Boost Safety
U.S. tire manufacturers recommend using the acronym P.A.R.T. (Pressure, Alignment, Rotation, and Tread) to remember the basics of tire care. Drivers should check pressure at least once a month, monitor tread depth, and schedule regular alignment and rotation to ensure safety and optimal performance.
These steps are especially important during high-traffic travel periods like summer holidays, USTMA said.
National Support for Tire Safety Awareness
National Tire Safety Week is supported by USTMA members, including major manufacturers like Bridgestone Americas, Continental Tire the Americas, and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. The campaign also receives backing from the National Lieutenant Governors Association, which passed a 2025 tire safety resolution.
