U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes are mixed, for week ending June 14, reports AAR

United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending June 14, were mixed, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Rail carloads, at 224,851, increased 1.0% annually, trailing the week ending June 7, at 225,301, and topping the week ending May 31, at 219,599.

AAR reported that five of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including coal, up 2,968 carloads, to 59,027; farm products excl. grain, and food, up 619 carloads, to 16,817; and grain, up 617 carloads, to 19,767. Commodity groups posting annual declines included petroleum and petroleum products, down 749 carloads, to 10,294; miscellaneous carloads, down 736 carloads, to 8,714; and metallic ores and metals, down 554 carloads, to 20,668.

Intermodal containers and trailers, at 260,959, fell 3.5% annually, topping the weeks ending June 7 and May 31, at 258,5o6, and 240,285, respectively.

Through the first 24 weeks of 2025, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 5,250,685, are up 2.5% annually, and intermodal units, at 6,459,459 containers and trailers, are up 5.7% annually.
