How Dominique Fox Builds Connection at Best-One of Indy

Must read

When Dominique Fox joined Best-One of Indy in 2020, she stepped into a role that demanded equal parts heart and systems thinking. As the company’s HR Director, she embraced this mindset fully, blending strategy with empathy to create a workplace culture rooted in connection, consistency, and care.

“Love doesn’t have to be a funny word at work,” she says – and one look at what she’s accomplished at Best-One of Indy shows you that she means it.

A System Built for People

Dom has focused her work on building systems that prioritize empathy without sacrificing accountability. A perfect example lies in the creation of a multi-stage onboarding process for new hires. It equips them with everything they need to succeed at Best-One of Indy. She designs detailed, day-one communication that never feels overwhelming. She invites real, raw feedback through 45-day check-ins. Her systems give team members the support they need to quickly find their footing at their new job.

She even asks new team members how they prefer to receive recognition when they deserve it.

“It’s a small detail, but it changes the way people feel seen,” she says. “Maybe a team member prefers it to be private, or maybe they don’t mind a round of applause in a meeting. This way, their manager knows that sending a thank you card to their house might mean more than shouting them out in a huddle.”

Dominique created this process to reflect her own values – in particular, her caring candor.

“People don’t care what you know until they know that you care,” she says. “Once they do, you can have the honest conversations that help them grow.”

Dominique Fox on Creating Internal Raving Fans at Best-One of Indy

Onboarding is just the beginning. In her position, she’s responsible for looking out for the needs of Best-One of Indy’s team members while simultaneously looking out for the needs of the business. It’s a balancing act she doesn’t take lightly

“We believe in creating internal raving fans,” she says. “We know that the enthusiasm of a customer will never rise above a team member’s, so we’ve got to make sure we’re creating that environment for our team members.”

One of her core responsibilities is maintaining high retention rates in an industry where staying power is anything but guaranteed.

“A lot of my time is spent truly trying to create an environment where every day our team members feel like we are living by our vision, mission, and core values,” she says. “That means we work with our leaders and ensure they are well equipped to love our people. If our people feel that they are in a place to have vulnerable conversations, that is what will really help our team members grow from a place of positivity and love.”

From the Court to the Office

Outside work, Dom finds balance on the sand volleyball court, which she has played weekly with her brother for years. That team spirit reflects in her leadership. She believes connection and consistency build strong teams, both on the court and at work.

“HR doesn’t always get the spotlight,” she says. “But if we’re doing our job right, we’re building a place where people want to be.”

Dom has proven to be the kind of leader who brings kindness and purpose to everything she does. Dominique Fox is an invaluable team member at Best-One of Indy. In the words of the company’s Director of Marketing and Brand Excellence, Trula Womack: “Every HR Department needs a Dom.”
