North Sea Port and Port of Moerdijk create multimodal corridor

Must read

North Sea Port and Port of Moerdijk are joining forces to develop a new multimodal corridor between Zeeland and Brabant. Both port companies want to structurally strengthen inland container shipping and offer a sustainable and efficient alternative to road transport.

The collaboration focuses on making better use of existing shipping and rail connections. Inland shipping forms the backbone of the corridor, supplemented with rail and flexible road transport for pre- and post-transport. This integrated approach creates a robust network to distribute goods flows more intelligently.

A concrete result is the structural inland shipping connection between Moerdijk and Vlissingen/Terneuzen. This is provided by Danser Group and Contargo Transbox. Contargo currently sails twice a week, while Danser also uses capacity. The frequency can be increased as volumes grow.

The connection links shortsea and deepsea activities in both ports to their hinterland networks. Conditioned goods such as food and fruit in particular form an important flow, with destinations in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, among others.

In addition, both ports are working together to achieve greater transparency in logistics flows. Shared data shows that there are opportunities to bundle cargo better and plan it more efficiently. The Joint Corridors Off-Road program supports this process by mapping sailing schedules, capacity and goods flows.

The ports invite terminals, operators and shippers to join the corridor. By bundling volumes, the inland shipping connection can be further strengthened.
