The Port of Brussels is launching an interactive map to simplify the transport of building materials via the waterway. The tool provides an overview of all relevant actors and infrastructures in the inland shipping network.
The new map centralizes information about producers of building materials along the canal, inland shipping operators and Brussels port companies that offer logistics solutions for supply and removal. For example, the Port of Brussels wants to help companies find the right partners more quickly and better analyze the possibilities of transport via the waterway.
The map covers not only Brussels, but the whole of Belgium and will be further expanded in the future to include northern France and the south of the Netherlands. In addition to this digital tool, the Port also offers guidance to companies that want to investigate whether transport via the waterway is feasible for their projects.
The transport of building materials represents a significant volume in the Brussels Capital Region. For yards with large quantities – from approximately 1,000 tons – the waterway is an efficient and reliable solution. Barges allow large volumes to be transported at once, which reduces the number of trucks on the road as well as COâ‚‚ emissions and traffic pressure in the city.
