Nike wants to cut up to 441 jobs in Laakdal

Must read

Nike has announced plans to cut up to 441 jobs at its European distribution center in Laakdal. The company announced this on Tuesday during a special works council.

According to the BBTK trade union, approximately 330 of the threatened jobs are located in the weekend shifts of the European Logistics Campus, where online orders are mainly processed. Nike states that the measure is related to declining sales volumes. Online sales rose sharply during the corona pandemic, but have since fallen again. The company wants to focus more on sales through physical stores.

In June last year, Nike cut 155 weekend worker jobs. The employees involved were then given the option to switch to a weekly shift or accept a social plan.

In addition to the possible eliminations in the weekend shifts, another 81 jobs in the logistics team would also disappear. Nike wants to simplify its activities and organize them more efficiently.

A new meeting is planned between management and unions next Thursday. The unions say that employees will be further informed later this week and do not rule out actions.

Six months ago, the company also announced plans to cut around 80 jobs in the IT department. After the planned restructuring, around 4,500 people would still work at Nike in Laakdal.
