Brussels coalition agreement: LHVs in the blind spot

Must read

The coalition agreement of the Brussels-Capital Region contains a number of guidelines on mobility… but nothing about the movement of heavy trucks. The lack of a proposal to allow LHVs on the Brussels part of the Ring is causing reactions from Transport and Logistics Flanders.

The new Brussels Prime Minister Boris Dilliès was an outspoken opponent of the Good Move plan and this is also evident from the reading of the coalition agreement. Positive points include the additional €40 million that will be spent on the reconstruction of regional roads and tunnels, and the willingness to make progress in a coordinated manner on inter-regional issues such as the possible future car vignette.

Interregional cooperation could also be discussed with regard to LHVs, which are still prohibited on the few kilometers of the Ring R0 in Brussels. Unfortunately, TLV notes, this point is not included in the coalition agreement. “TLV wants to sit down at the negotiating table with the new Brussels government to work together on a new regional mobility plan that pays sufficient attention to the transport and logistics of the last kilometer. In this context, TLV repeats its request to finally allow LHVs on the Brussels ring road. If Good Move’s ambition was to limit the traffic of trucks and vans on Brussels roads, then LHVs are extremely suitable for this purpose. Not only can the number of vehicles be increased reduced, but by opening the R0 to these vehicles, traffic between the other regions can run more optimally, without major detours. This also means a social improvement in terms of emissions,” says Johan Staes, CEO of TLV.
