The Flemish Government finally approved the decision on innovative sailing on January 9. This positions Flanders as a European pioneer with a future-oriented regulatory framework for automated sailing, remote control and alternative propulsion systems in inland shipping.
The new regulations enable the transition from temporary pilot projects to a structural application on Flemish inland waterways. This provides companies with legal certainty to invest in innovation, digitalization and sustainability. “Technology does not stand still, neither does Flanders. We give innovative players clarity and space, without sacrificing safety,” says Flemish Minister of Mobility, Public Works and Ports Annick De Ridder.
An equivalent level of safety remains the absolute condition. Every innovative vessel must demonstrate that it is at least as safe as a conventional vessel. This assessment is carried out by an independent Committee of Experts, in consultation with waterway managers and port companies.
