U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes see gains, for week ending January 10, reports AAR

United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending January 10, saw annual gains, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Rail carloads, at 232,803, saw a 16.7% annual increase, topping the weeks ending January 3 and December 27, at 192,665, and 186,673, respectively.

AAR reported that nine of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: coal, up 14,178 carloads, to 66,374; nonmetallic minerals, up 6,539 carloads, to 28,766; and grain, up 4,956 carloads, to 26,204. The lone commodity group posting an annual decline was forest products, down 748 carloads, to 7,838.

Weekly intermodal containers and trailers, at 277,654 units, saw a 4.4% annual gain, topping the weeks ending January 3 and December 27, at 211,628, and 203,622, respectively.

 

For the first week of the year, AAR reported that U.S. rail carload volume, at 232,803, is up 16.7% annually, and intermodal containers and trailers, at 277,654, is up 4.4%, for the same period.
