WDP and DHL accelerate sustainability of the Bornem logistics campus

Must read

An important step towards emission-free warehouse activities is being taken on the logistics campus in Bornem. The approximately 120,000 m² site switches completely from gas-fired heating to an electric system based on R290 heat pump technology, powered by renewable electricity generated locally.

R290, a natural refrigerant with a very low GWP value, significantly reduces the climate impact in the event of leaks. At the same time, the system offers high energy efficiency, making it a future-oriented choice within the European regulatory framework. The decision follows an extensive technical study in which different heating solutions were compared, both for the site in Bornem and for use in future projects.

The existing gas installations will make way for a central heat pump and hot water air heaters. The switch should substantially reduce CO₂ emissions from heating compared to traditional logistics buildings.

The campus will also receive additional energy upgrades, including a thorough air-tightness analysis, a smart building management system, an expansion of the solar installation and a battery energy system to optimize self-consumption. The electrical infrastructure is also being prepared for future applications such as charging points, automation and residual heat integration.
