Graham Mitchell, CEO of Micheldever Group/Protyre, outlined major challenges in UK tyre retail, including rising costs, online price competition, complex product ranges, low consumer knowledge, technician shortages, and evolving car ownership models, at the NTDA’s Tyre Industry Conference 2025. He also criticised the legality of part-worn tyres and highlighted regulatory changes in tyre disposal.

Despite these headwinds, Mitchell sees opportunities in the UK’s growing and aging car parc, EV servicing, and aftermarket demand. He urged retailers to strengthen supplier ties, digitize CRM systems, improve local marketing, educate customers, and differentiate services. Mitchell concluded that while challenges are significant, independent retailers can still thrive by adapting strategically.
