In July 2023, we published an editorial entitled “Cyber security and the tyre business”. It focused on how traditionally tyre businesses have focused on physical security like cash management and stock control, but now also face cybersecurity risks due to connected devices like smart tyres, TPMS, and online systems. To illustrate that point we highlighted the case of hidden GPS trackers found in a UK government vehicle’s ECU, which was sourced from a Chinese supplier. Furthermore, we noted that Pirelli’s tyre sensors prompted Italy’s 2023 Golden Power rule to limit foreign control over sensitive data collection – the wider implications of which are still playing out. But the most direct impacts on the tyre business were TPMS spoofing, SimpleTire’s 2023 data breach and when a cyber-attack disrupted ATU’s operations in Germany. Before that, the most high-profile case was arguably when a cyberattack shutdown production at Bridgestone tyre factories in North and South America for a time, back in 2022. Since then, the number of incidents has exploded. So here, in a preview of the November 2025 edition of Tyres & Accessories magazine, we take a look at what’s happened.
